Description of Property The British Schools Museum is a unique site which preserves the history of schools over the past 200 years, hidden in the heart of Hitchin, Hertfordshire. We have four Historic classrooms set out as different eras in history and also a semi-detached period-decorated Victorian house onsite, all ready-to-use as sets. From our (unique) great Georgian Monitorial Schoolroom, built to house 300 boys in one room in 1837, to our traditional lecture theatre-style Gallery Victorian Classroom (seats 30), to our Edwardian WWI classroom or the evacuee's location of our 1940s WWII classroom - there is sure to be an educational setting here that suits your production. Our Headmaster's House is set out as a late 1880s family home, with 3 bedrooms upstairs, and downstairs a parlour, pantry, kitchen and scullery. It has a backyard with a separate outdoor privy and work shed attached and a mangle in the yard. Additional filming locations include our exterior Edwardian fire escape, our large basement which doubles as an air-raid shelter, the traditional school staircase leading to a long corridor on our upper floor, the cloakroom outside our toilet block, and exterior locations of the entrance lobbies and central playground of our site. Behind the scenes we have the Museum storerooms which can be used for Museum shots, and we house a substantial collection of historical toys and school equipment which may be used as props by prior arrangement.   Access The Victorian Gallery Classroom has step-only access (3 stone steps up from the outside), and the Headmaster's house has a step up to the front and back doors, so is not wheelchair accessible. Our Museum collection store and corridor is first floor (stairs), and there is a sloping exterior walkway leading up to the upper portion of the site.
Noise The Headmaster's House is adjacent to Queen Street which can have heavy traffic and is opposite an Asda. The rest of the school buildings are sited away from the road and have residential and retirement properties on either side, and little-used a food path behind.   Copyright The images and information on this page are subject to copyright.
